Building
Schools for the Future
“Does
HCC stand up to examination?”
As the new
school year gets underway, Ayfer Orhan, Labour’s Parliamentary
Spokesperson for Hemel Hempstead, wishes to express particular
thanks to all involved in successfully amalgamating six of Hemel’s
primary schools into three new primaries – Galley Hill in
Gadebridge, Yewtree in Highfield and Maple Grove in
Grovehill.
Ayfer
says;
“The process
of change has been a difficult one and an emotional one. All credit
must go to the teachers, parents and governors and, of course, the
children for the positive way in which they came together to make
this work. I wish the three new schools every success for their
futures.”
In referring
to the former primaries, she adds;
“It is still
saddening, however, when considering the growth planned for Hemel
Hempstead,
that so much has to be lost in education infrastructure to deal
with what is likely to be a short-term problem in
numbers.”
Ayfer
therefore calls upon Tory-run Herts County Council to provide a
formal response to her question;
“Why, when
Labour’s ‘Building Schools for the Future’ programme is opening so
many new schools around the country, is the County Council’s
programme of closures so at odds with the concerns of parents here
in Hemel?”
An answer
could be that the Tories have pledged to slash £4.5 billion from
Labour’s schools building programme. This could effectively mean
that 1 in 7 future school building projects – a total of 360
schools across the country – will be cancelled.
