A £6millon government cash boost to kick-start major construction projects in Hemel Hempstead which have stalled during the economic downturn has been welcomed by Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate Ayfer Orhan.
Two projects in Dacorum had been shortlisted for the funding which will see builders will be back on the job at the site of the Rosetta House, the former Jewish Care Home in Midland Road, and the former Sappi Graphics site in Belswains Lane.
Dacorum Borough Council has given permission at both sites for a combined total of almost 600 new properties, many of which will be affordable homes for rent.
“I welcome this news. It is proof that the government is taking action in these tough times to keep our economy moving in the right direction. It will give things a fillip locally, unlock potential, keep people in work and provide much needed skills-training,” said Ayfer Orhan.
She stressed however that the government’s action was neither a “gimmick nor a handout” pointing out this was the second phase of an already successful scheme that had been rolled out across Britain and that less than a fifth would consist of direct grant to support developers with most of the remainder made up of repayable loans or equity financing.
